As Certified Tax Law Specialist, Stefan Winheller mainly advises German and foreign charitable organizations and foundations on Tax Law, the Law of Nonprofit Organizations as well as the Law of charitable giving and international grant-making. Highly experienced in the nonprofit field, Stefan Winheller is a legal and tax counsel for major nonprofit organizations in and outside Germany. Specifically, he accompanies foreign charities as to setting up branches or subsidiaries in Germany. Stefan Winheller also advises national and international high net-worth individuals when it comes to establishing foundations or to handling the succession of companies and assets. In addition, he gives internationally operating businesses advice on questions of International Tax Law, tax planning and optimization.
Stefan Winheller studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg, Bielefeld, Speyer and Cologne with a major in tax law. After being admitted to the German Bar, he completed his postgraduate studies in US tax law as a merit scholarship recipient at Golden Gate University, San Francisco and received his LL.M. in Taxation degree “with honors”. During his stay abroad Stefan Winheller did intensive studies on the Law of Taxation of US nonprofit organizations and foundations as well as on issues of International Tax Law. In his dissertation-thesis in process he examines the differences and similarities of the nonprofit tax laws in Germany and the US. For more than seven years, Stefan Winheller was the CEO of American Friends of Germany, Inc., a US-based charity that supported German charities in their fundraising efforts in the US.
Stefan Winheller has published numerous articles. He regularly gives lectures and is a sought-after speaker in his fields of speciality, e.g. for DATEV e.G., the renowned Tax School Dr. Endriss or the Abbe Institute for Foundations of the University of Jena, Germany. He is the founder and the managing partner of WINHELLER Attorneys at Law and as such in charge of the strategic and international development of the firm.
